{UAH} JOB RECRUITMENT CHAOS IN NIGERIA, WHY I AGREE WITH EDWARD MULINDWA ABOUT INEPTITUDE OF AFRICANS.

I hope you have all heard about the madness that occurred in Nigeria last week where more than 50 people died in a stampede in stadioums in Abuja, Lagos and other cities.

The government wanted to recruit 30 immigration iofficers nation-wide and decided to ask candidates to turn up in stadioums around the country. An agency was engaged to carry out the recruitment and they charged 1,000 naira for every application form they sent out. In a country of high unemployment, almost 25% of the young have no jobs, 6 million people applied which netted the agency a cool 6 billion jus t for the application forms alone.

6 million people attempted to get into these stadiums. In Lagos whic has a capacity of only 50,000, 70,000 people turned up. In Abjuja, more than 80,000 turned up.

Inevitable there was chaos and stampedes because neither the police nor the army had been informed. The agency just sent security guards.

No interviews could be carried out in the end. Over 50 dead and thousands injured. But the agency collected $36 million altogether from the applicants. This is non-refundable.

In the meantime, the government has laid the blame on the applicants for behaving in a disorderly manner and not following instructions. No body has been arrested. The Minister concerned has recived support from the parliament, which has also blamed the jobless people struggling to get one of the few jobs they have seen advertised in many years.

On this occassion, I will agree with Edward Mulindwa that Africans are stupid and have only themselves to blame for their suffering. If we can not recruit 30,000 to a job, who do we expect to do it for us?
