Kibaki's man quits Othaya MP contest for Wambui - News
Retired President Kibaki's preferred candidate for the Othaya parliamentary seat in last year's General Election has opted out of next month's by-election.
The exit of James Gichuki Mugambi leaves the unseated MP Mary Wambui and election petitioner Peter King'ara as the main contenders in the April 29 poll.
"After working closely with retired President Mwai Kibaki, particularly in my capacity as the chairman of Othaya Development Association, I have learnt the virtues of tolerance and patience," Mr Mugambi told the Sunday Nation, explaining his decision to quit the race.
Mr Mugambi said after holding a number of meetings with TNA party officials, he decided to drop his bid because he did not want to antagonise the party. TNA has decided to give a direct nomination to Ms Wambui.
Mr Mugambi said after last year's elections, he publicly resolved to support the Jubilee administration and he did not want to disrupt the alliance's agenda even though his relationship with the presidency and other executive arms of government was solid.
He said he will run in 2017.
But Mr Kingára, the election petitioner, declined to give any information on his party ticket.
"I'm not going to comment right now, I'm leaving my options open. You will know on that day (March 27) since this is one of my campaign strategies," he said.
Mr King'ara successfully filed an election petition against Ms Wambui. The Court of Appeal in Nyeri nullified her election noting that there were many errors in the Othaya parliamentary vote in the March 4 General Election.
According to the IEBC April 1-2 will be the days for the nomination of candidates backed by political parties and independent candidates for the April 29 by-election, and nomination papers shall be delivered by candidates to the Othaya constituency returning officer.
Disputes related to or arising from decisions of the returning officer after nominations shall be determined within seven days of lodging the dispute with the commission.
