Mafabi voted back to BCU unopposed - National

Former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Nathan Nandala Mafabi has been voted back unopposed as chairman of Bugisu Cooperative Union.

The special annual general meeting called by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Ms Amelia Kyambadde, yesterday also voted back the entire board save for only three positions of the Sironko Valley, Manafwa and Lwakhakha zones that were replaced by MP Isaiah Sasa [Budadiriri East], Mr Charles Namukowa and Mr Enoch Musundi respectively.

In December 2010, government suspended the BCU board led by Mr Mafabi on claims that his board had falsified the books of accounts.

Government then appointed a committee to investigate BCU operations between 2003 and 2010 but could not release the report due to various petitions they were receiving from other disgruntled members of the union. 
This consequently prompted the ministry to order another forensic audit in December 2013 to look at accounts from 1996 to 2010.

While reading out the contents of the forensic audit reports to the members at Resort Hotel in Mbale, minister Kyambadde told the delegates from the 250 cooperative societies that government was ready to hand over the BCU back to the farmers only after electing a new board.
The report accessed by the Daily Monitor exonerated Mr Mafabi of causing any financial loss to the union but asked him to return all the land titles in his possession which he did immediately.

Mr Mafabi promised to work with the new board to weed out corruption and ensure that the recommendations of the forensic audit reports are implemented.
