Hope Mwesigye, a former minister and a sister-in-law to Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, has said it is unfortunate that President Museveni is leading the charge against Mbabazi.

Mwesigye’s remarks were aired on Hope Radio (102.6 FM) on Friday during the Tuhanuure (Let's discuss) programme, that runs between 8pm -8:30pm.

Later she appeared on Voice of Kigezi between 8:30pm and 9pm.

Her comments came against the backdrop of recent political events within the NRM which have seen Mbabazi’s power and influence greatly diminished.

Hope and her sister Jacqueline, wife of Mbabazi, have been accused severally by the ruling NRM MPs caucus of mobilising politically against President Museveni

Quoting the Biblical book of Genesis chapter 37:12, she equated Mbabazi’s predicament to what happened to Joseph when he was sold by his brothers into slavery.

She said Mbabazi had also been betrayed and treated shabbily by the party for which he has sacrificed so much.

What MPs did in Kyankwanzi to endorse Museveni as the sole party flag bearer going into 2016 was against the party constitution, she said. The MPs, she added, had no power to make party decisions usually made by other relevant organs.

“I was recruited into the NRM by Amama Mbabazi. Since I stayed here and did clandestine work, I sheltered many combatants of the NRM. But see what is happening,” she said.

She reiterated that Mbabazi or any other person was free to stand.

“Article 1 says power belongs to the people; so, it is the people to determine how they want to be governed,” she said.

The NRM caucus heard last week that Mwesigye and her sister Jacqueline Mbabazi were using party structures to undermine the NRM chairman. The MPs resolved that the duo should appear before the party’s Central Executive Committee to defend their actions.

Mwesigye said she was not afraid to appear before the CEC.

“If they write to me formally asking me to appear, I will.”

She said after she lost the Kabale Woman MP seat, she had decided to keep out of the limelight. She said she was forced to appear in the media to clarify reports that she was undermining the party chairman, President Museveni.

Since Mbabazi’s woes began, Mwesigye said, she has been trailed by security operatives. But she was not intimidated.
