Kampala.
Two members of the National Resistance Movement Party Youth League who last week backed a nomination of Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi as the ruling party's flag bearer in the 2016 presidential election have been arrested.
Mr Adam Luzindana (chairman Kampala) was arrested at Central Police Station in Kampala where he is reported to have gone to pick his vehicle while William Seriyinda (chairman of Central) was picked up in Bukoto, a Kampala suburb where he was meeting some individuals. Both were detained late afternoon on Saturday.
A colleague of the two individuals, Northern Uganda NRM youth chairman, Mr Omodo-Omodo, who sounded frustrated, confirmed their arrest to this newspaper.
Mr Luzindana has been running a NGO known as Public Opinion which gives out awards to outstanding members of the public. He is a close associate of the Prime Minister and was instrumental in the Makerere press conference where a faction of the NRM youth wing announced that they had endorsed Mr Mbabazi as their candidate for party chairman, and subsequently presidential flag bearer.
Mr Seriyinda is a key mobiliser for the same camp in central region. Both individuals sit on the executive committee of the NRM Youth League.
NRM deputy spokesperson Ofwono Opondo yesterday acknowledged the arrest of Mr Luzindana but dismissed allegations that the arrests were connected to their loyalty to the Prime Minister. He referred to Mr Luzindana as a conman who has been repeatedly arrest
