Uganda: Miracle - the West Is Not That Far Off, After All
BY MALITA WAMALA, 18 MARCH 2014When I think of 'how far' Ugandans have come, I am convinced that at this rate we too will soon not be irked by two men kissing in the middle of the street. I remember years ago on a cold winter morning in Europe I bumped into two women kissing and snogging passionately at the bus stop.
My eyes nearly popped out. I only stopped staring when I realised I was the only one finding the couple odd.
So, I was thinking, how different is the West's indifference to certain vices, from our own compromise with sin lately? I think soon, we too will be willing to fall for anything and stand for little. If you look around you, the person living his or her life as prescribed by the God we serve is increasingly looked upon as 'boring', 'the oddball' and 'backward'.
It is now 'fashionable' to swear like a sailor, drink like a fish and have a wealthy sexual experience. In fact, I see unmarried church ministers all the time showing off baby pictures on their iPads, with no mention of a wedding anywhere in the works.
Actually, when I raised it with one such young Christian lady currently staying with her fiancé and toddler son, she replied: "We want to first build our own house and then plan for the wedding."
I did a double-take. I had to look twice to be sure she is the same spirit-filled, devoted person I sometimes see in fervent prayer. Yet that is life today. What was talked about in hushed embarrassed tones a couple of decades ago is shouted from the rooftops, because it is 'normal' now.
A worship leader in Kampala was left transfixed in place when another anointed choir member walked up to him and asked him to sire a child with her, because she loved how talented he was and that he had a sharp brain.
And she wasn't joking. She wanted nothing else - he is married - just his seed! And she could not understand why he was left speechless. Lately, anything goes; Lord have mercy. So pray that a few years down the road, things such as homosexuality, incest and prostitution are not simply trendy human rights choices!
