Uganda police arrest Kenyans at Migingo
TWO Kenyans were yesterday arrested by Ugandan security officers at Migingo Island in Nyatike constituency. Kenyan police officers and fishermen have blamed the Ugandan police of harassment . Ugandan police arrested the two traders after they accused them of being in possession bhang. But the Kenyan police dismissed the claims saying they are trampled up.
Two weeks ago, Ugandan police impounded close to Sh300,000 worth fish stock from Kenyan fishermen. The arrest contradicts agreement between Kenya and Uganda which states that no security officers can arrest a suspect from another country without prior consultation.
“We woke up in the morning to find the Ugandan forces led by sergeant Davis Besigye arresting the male and female traders,” Charles Otieno, a fisherman said. Kenyan and Ugandan officers will hold a joint security meeting today to discuss the island's management.
Sources told the Star the meeting m,igh however not take place after Kenyan forces led by Joseph Ndiga refused to consult with their Ugandan cunterparts over the arrest.
“Kenyans see this act as aggression as the two traders were arrested and locked up by Ugandans. They were recording police statements through Ugandans who shouldn’t be charging them,” Otieno said.
An official of the fishermen told the Star that they fear the two Kenyans may be taken to Uganda. The source said the two Kenyans might have been assaulted and tortured by Uganda during their arrests.
The official said that the Ugandan officer-in-charge of the island Fred Wakadugi, has been away and his juniors have been creating tension at the island by harassment of Kenyans.
