Woman MP tells men to account for bar time

KAMPALA - Mbarara Woman MP Emma Boona has tasked men to account for the time they spend in bars, and that they should stop asking about the movements of their wives.

“Men want their wives to account for the time they spend in fetching water, garden work and shopping in the market yet they [men] don’t account for their time,” Boona told women activists.

Boona who was the chief guest at an event of candle-lighting and story reading at Garden City in Kampala told guests that it is high time men “styled up and shared their programmes with their women”.

The MP was angry with men who beat their wives, and with fathers who cane their children, and said such actions create no peace at home.

She asked women to wake up the men where they are going wrong and compliment them when they are doing the right thing.

The activists read stories of how women are being tortured by their male counterparts over domestic issues as well as girls being denied education and being hunted for female genital mutilation.

The vocal legislator further blamed some men for leaving the women to attend developmental meetings such as road construction and water installation.

“When there is a road and water meeting you will find that it’s only women who attend. Men should wake up,” she said.

The chairperson of Action for Development Gertrude Ssekabira urged women activists to protect the rights of the girl child and ensure that she receives education.

A candle was lit to signify sympathy for the women and girls who have undergone difficult times at the hands of men.
