  • The generosity of a Swords couple to provide much needed help for people in Uganda, is having a very beneficial effect on people in the African country.

Pictured are Tony and Terri Burke and their daughter, Jovia with the box of goodies and the prams which will be shipped out to Uganda.

Tony and Terri Burke decided to send boxes of goodies and affordable items to people working in an orphanage in Kampala, capital of Uganda, and they have been doing so for the past few years.

Terri explained to the County Leader about how they came to be involved in this selfless act of kindness. "When we adopted our daughter, Jovia (5) from the Sanyu Baby's Home in Kampala, we were immediately struck by the plight of the mamas, who are the people who look after the orphans at the Sanyu. They work tirelessly and are so kind to the children. They get very little pay for their hard work, and we decided that we would help them out in whatever way we could, in thanks for the way they looked after Jovia and the other children," she said.

They decided to send boxes of non-perishable goods, just for the mamas to enjoy. These typically include footwear and items of clothing and jewellery that the mamas are unfamiliar with and are very grateful for.

"Even the most basic items that we take for granted here, are regarded as luxuries in Kampala," said Tony.

Terri added, "If I see shoes in Penneys, for example that cost E2 per pair, I will buy 60 pairs. Our friends are always on the lookout for bargains and we snap them up. There is no problem with getting the items for shipping, but the cost of shipping is very prohibitive. I would like to thank Ian Hunter and Deirdre King from the Pavilions Shopping Centre, who donated E250 towards the cost of the shipment. Also Pat Byrne from DHL is great at organising the shipments for us," said Terri.

Both Tony and Terri have been to Kampala several times since Jovia was adopted, and they are already planning another trip there in the near future.
