Gay man and trans woman go on trial in Uganda, face life in jail
A gay man and a trans woman are to go on trial in Uganda tomorrow (7 May).
The couple, who live together, are accused of sexual activity going against 'the order of nature'.
Kim Mukisa, 24, a businessman who reportedly identifies as gay, and Jackson Mukasa, 19, his alleged trans partner, face a potential life sentence in jail.
The couple will not be facing charges under the newly enacted Anti-Homosexuality Act, 76 Crimes reports.
They are being charged under Section 145 of the Penal Code that bans consensual same-sex relations, according to Sexual Minorities Uganda.
This is unprecedented, with all previous cases dismissed for want of prosecution or have remained pending.
Mukisa and Mukasa were arrested in January, charged with living as 'husband and wife' in Kampala.
The couple have been held in Luzira Prison since the arrest.
