In Summary
President Museveni has said he allowed the Kyankwanzi resolution in order to stop ambitious people within the NRM who wanted power using subversive means.President Museveni has said he allowed the Kyankwanzi resolution in order to stop ambitious people within the NRM who wanted power using subversive means.
“I welcomed the Kyankwanzi resolution in the context of party cohesion because of rumours that there were `wanters’ and ‘wanters’ who were conducting themselves in a bad way and also using subversive ways. If you want in a bad way, you are forced to tell lies,” Mr Museveni was quoted in a statement from State House on Thursday.
“This is part of the problem especially at the level of the President to say; I want, I want. The issue is not to want but what the country needs,” Mr Museveni added.
The President was addressing NRM youth leaders from Bugisu, Bukedi, Sebei, Busoga, Teso and Karamoja sub-regions on Wednesday.
His response was sparked by demands from the youth urging him to continue leading the country because of his contribution to nation building. He did not name the power hungry people within NRM.
In February, NRM party members at a retreat in Kyankwanzi made a resolution endorsing President Museveni as the party’s sole candidate for the 2016 presidential elections.
The resolution was prompted by growing speculation that Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi had ambitions to stand for president in 2016.
This prompted Northern Youth MP Evelyn Anite to move a motion endorsing Museveni as the NRM sole candidate in 2016 which was endorsed by the party members including Mr Mbabazi,.
“You say this man is useless! You look at a General and say this man is useless? Mistake one will lead to mistake two because you undermine others,” Mr Museveni said. He cautioned the youth against politics of indiscipline which he said is not good for the country. He advised them not to take politics as a career but a service to the people.
