{UAH} Malls, Credit Society and Uganda Consuming Youth
Malls, Credit Society and the Uganda Youth
The sociological profiling of Uganda society is rapidly becoming that of western or American character. A young man marries at 25 years. The young woman as well as the male partners are both working – where do they work?
The diasporas find your level before it is too late:
1. Uganda has over twenty five (25) banks (financial sector) with other upcoming small and medium financial institutions minimum wages here is about 500'000 Uganda shilling. These banks you will find them almost everywhere in Uganda- This is a growing population of wage earners.
2. Merchant financial sector/ Mobile money business though still low wages, is generating tens of jobs like stock brokers etc.
3. Communications and Media sector has grown so fast that radio, television, newsprint, celestial media broadcasting (cable TV/Internet) is adding several thousand jobs on the market. Normally these are young people. Orange, UTL, airtel (warid), GoTv, NBS, WBS, NTV, BBC, over 150 radio station Star TV, MTN, K2, Smile, Smart telecom are also adding several thousand high and constant wage earns on the job market – these are basically young people and high consumers.
4. Entertainment and Music industry would add more than tens of jobs but it is thoroughly disorganized and can only sell in Uganda unlike the Congos which sell internationally. The English is very bad but locally it is profiling high spenders (Uganda niggers! are racking in millions of shillings on a daily basis)
5. The leaping insurance sector is growing stronger also sucking in many more youth into the job markets. There about 20 insurance companies and they are spreading far and wide
6. The education sector although still staggering has added hundreds of high profile jobs. Currently there tens of private primary, secondary and tertiary institution in the range on 300000 – 800000 UG shs per month. A working young mother and husband can afford regular consumption.
7. The food and beverage sector though very low wage employ – has produced a high wage level administrative working class normally youth adding some few hundred jobs.
8. Services and utility providers like Umeme, NWSC, UCC, KCCA, NSSF, URA, UNRA etc are constantly recruiting young people and these are high wage employers and spread country wide.
9. There are several tens of NGO and research institutions, funded from international organization and they wages are fantastically international. These have created several hundreds of jobs and mainly for the youth.
10. The nascent gas and oil industry Tullow, Total, Chinese oil companies are constantly recruiting. Besides there is an ever expanding investment in petroleum by-products adding tens of jobs.
11. Young estates and housing sector though disorganised has produced one of the ever growing consumer sector. Moreover this is an ever expanding sector with linkages in the construction industry, domestic and home appliances, hence growth in the electrical, construction engineering sectors normally dominated with inexperience young people earning million of shillings on a daily basis.
12. Tourism and hotel industry sector is slowly expanding witnessed in the number of high class hotels being built normally employing Kenyans. This is changing very fast sucking in young Ugandans with tourism and hospitality back ground. Wages range from 300'000 ug shs to 1'000'000 a month
All the above sector are still expanding
13. The transport sector is very low wage earner and by virtual of disorganization and numbers; boda boda, matatus it appears to be contracting unless it is organized as soon as possible
14. Some manufacturing sector is also creating a good number of jobs for the youth (breweries, heavy industry like steel – mining is almost dead
There is more but there is need for a deeper sociological study of this society and I need funders in order to do so – an volunteers?
