Armed Forces “Danger Pay” To End In 22 Locations Next Week
U.S. troops stationed in Haiti, Rwanda, and the Persian Gulf are among those who will stop receiving risk-based bonuses beginning Monday.
NEW YORK (TRNS) – More than 40,000 servicemembers will stop receiving IDP (“imminent danger pay”) on Monday for work conducted in 22 locales around the world.
IDP bonuses run up to $225 each month, or $7.50 per day, and were claimed by close to 200,000 individuals in 2013.
IDP’s will remain on offer in 35 locales, including Iraq and Afghanistan, but after an “in-depth threat assessment from the combatant commands,” the Pentagon announced earlier this year that the full roster of imminent danger areas required further trimming.
“The imminent threat of physical harm to U.S. military personnel due to civil insurrection, civil war, terrorism or wartime conditions is significantly reduced in many countries,” the Pentagon said in
a January announcement.
As of June 1st, the following areas will be delisted by the Pentagon:
The nine land areas of East Timor, Haiti, Liberia, Oman, Rwanda, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
The six land areas and airspace above Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Serbia and Montenegro.
The four water areas of the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, and the Red Sea.
The water area and air space above the Persian Gulf.
The upcoming cuts to the scope of the IDP program is estimated to save the Pentagon over $100 million.
