Prof Gilbert Bukenya left NRM long ago

When I read that the NRM was intending to summon former vice president, Prof Gilbert Bukenya, for openly campaigning for Brenda Nabukenya in the just concluded Luweero Woman by-election, I was amazed. As they say, actions speak louder.

Just after he was granted bail in the Chogm case some two years back, Bukenya had a stop-over at Wakiso and was welcomed by the sub-county chairman, who also doubles as DP chairman. Bukenya was also seen waving a political sign of two palms, which is different from that of NRM.

As if that was not enough, he lied to his former boss, President Museveni, during the by-election for his seat that he was not going to address rallies. He organised many, where the DP chairman was not only the master of ceremony but even invited, "rebel MPs", led by Muhammad Nsereko (Kampala Central), to attend.

It is on record that, as NRM chairman of Wakiso district, Bukenya has never convened a single party meeting since he was released from prison. He refused to attend the recent Kyankwanzi MPs' retreat without giving an apology. So, Bukenya campaigning for Nabukenya was expected and was also a loud confirmation that he has long divorced NRM.

Bukenya could still refer to himself as NRM because he may be shopping for NRM members to join his anticipated New Movement, which he is likely to use while campaigning for president.
