{UAH} Dr Pamela Kalyegira should retract her statement

Kalyegira should retract her statement

I was shocked by a statement made by Dr Pamela Kalyegira, the dean at the faculty of Law at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, concerning pre-entry exams.

The media quoted Kalyegira meanly confronting the Baganda and their language. She reportedly said that "those who are eager to pass Luganda at A-Level may not pass the law pre- entry exams".

Kalyegira's utterance was a clear indication of sectarianism, which our Constitution prohibits. There are many pro-Luganda students out there whose dream is to use their language to cultivate good scores – even to join the field of law. In citing Luganda as the major cause of failure in the law pre-entry exams, Kalyegira forgot cognitive development and academic background of most students, whose education is oriented with passing exams. She did not even consider the marking and grading system at Uneb or the students' perceptions.

Kalyegira's assertions may, in turn, shape opinion among students and they start looking at the Luganda subject as an obstacle to joining the field of law – which is very wrong. Kalyegira should withdraw her statement and apologise to both the Baganda and the entire country.

Timothy Kitasse,
Kampala.
