For three weeks now, the palace of King Charles Wesley Mumbere Iremangoma of Obusinge Bwe Rwenzururu is in a blackout.
Power was disconnected last month over a Shs 25m debt. And kingdom officials claim water will be cut next, with arrears topping Shs 2m. Kingdom spokesman Joshua Buluku confirmed the king was in a blackout.
A copy of the power bill shows power was cut on May 12 2014. The bill, in the names of N Charles M.M Wesley 9999,0/0, shows the king last paid for power in August last year.
A Umeme official at Kasese said they warned the kingdom about the disconnection earlier but when the palace became non-responsive, they cut the power.
"We informed the ministers and we went on to issue the bills to them before we disconnected but after long time without them clearing the bill, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) directed us to disconnect the palace," he said.
Meanwhile, the National Water and Sewage Corporation has also threatened to disconnect the palace water over a Shs 2,155,079 debt. Barisaba Kajubi, an NWSC official, said of the Shs 2m debt at least Shs 249,688 is for the queen mother and the Shs 1,905,391 debt is for the palace.
He added that the king last paid Shs 600,000 in August last year.
"We told the area manager but he discouraged us from disconnecting him and we did not disconnect," Kajubi said.
The Area NWSC Manager Stanley Kamusige said they had informed the kingdom officials about the impending water cut.
