-- William Ruto has become prisoner of self denial in bid to save face By Alexander Chagema Updated Friday, June 6th 2014 at 22:58 GMT +3 Share this story: Coalitions of political parties' are constituted on partnerships that are not always at par, Jubilee not excepted. That explains why William Ruto prides in the title of 'deputy president' while President Uhuru Kenyatta hogs the full honours. I don't recall anybody casting a vote for Ruto but if I am wrong, correct me. He is riding on the crest of the wave generated by Kenyatta's speedboat, period.
If Kenyatta quits, Ruto has no two ways about it. He too must go. If Ruto quits, Kenyatta stays, needing only to look around for another malleable replacement from URP for the propagation of appearances. Needless to say, the gullible unreasoning masses must feel represented by their kinsmen at the higher echelons of power even as they grow destitute by the day. Ruto knows this all too well and those who have followed his speeches will have noticed he almost invariably at some point must interject, 'the president and I'. Self-denial is a debilitating emotion that can keep one prisoner for the duration of the stay.
For the DP, it will be an anxious five-year wait. Ruto is an abandoned man, quartered by his own kinsmen but he pretends all is well. He is the poor relative in the Jubilee house, tolerated but not appreciated. When besieged, and it is getting to be frequent, he finds solace in throwing his title around. And now there is this lawyer behind him, sticking to his coat tails, who thinks anybody whose ideas don't jell with Jubilee must be thrown behind bars. A lawyer, mark you, a man who should know better but would rather bury his head in the sand. Any Tom, Dick and Harry can tell Mr Kipchumba Murkomen that the government can no longer throw people behind bars for the mere thrill of it.
That analogue mentality must be dispensed with pronto. Kenyans are enlightened. They know their rights. If someone forgot to tell him, Kenya is a working democracy. See also: Rift Valley MPs tighten screws on Ruto as allies threaten to decamp In the political setup, Mr Murkomen is a novice nobody takes seriously and that is why the combative Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo finds it beneath himself to even mention him in passing. That is how inconsequential he is and should spare us the din. But he is not alone. Helping him curve a niche for themselves, as, perhaps, the most obnoxious jubilee acolytes are Aden Duale and Kithure Kindiki. Just listening to this trio rant gives me a migraine. And I believe I am not alone. The
UhuRuto duo took to office with such gusto and assuredness they taunted the opposition at public rallies that they would have to wait for 20 years before coming anywhere near the presidency. Today, one year down the line, the president is asking the opposition to allow him finish his five years in peace. That is the reality of politics. Exuberance and wishful thinking have no place. And the one thing that leaders keep forgetting is to never make promises one has no wherewithal of fulfilling. People will hold you to them and when you can't deliver they will bring you down. In an attempt to become the Kalenjin supreme leader, Ruto committed himself so comprehensively he has no way of extracting himself honourably.
The party and man he vilified are coming full circle to haunt him. The issues he threw at ODM and Raila to discredit them have boomerang and he is at a loss on how to handle them. The 'nusu mkate' refrain he so loved to sing while deriding ODM is something he wishes people forgot. Though promised an equal share of the bread, URP is getting crumbs and even those are being swept away but he can still face the people and claim everything is placid.
He blamed Raila for evicting the Kalenjins from the Mau forest yet the government he serves continues to evict the very same people whose rights he said Raila had violated. The writer is a correspondent for The Standard

Democracy is two Wolves and a Lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed Lamb contesting the results.
