Rwanda Coffee - An interesting factoid

In 2013, the amount of high grade "Arabica" coffee exported by Rwanda to international markets exceeded the total amount of that specific class of high grade coffee Arabica actually grown within Rwanda.  Of that coffee, over $15 million worth was exported to the USA and bags of "Rwanda" coffee can be purchased at COSTCO and also occasionally at Starbucks.

Also of some interest, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative (a part of the Executive Office of the US President), Rwanda's overall trade deficit with the US went from $3 million in 2012 to a surplus of $747,000 in 2013.

It must be noted that Rwandan products and the "Rwanda" brand are being very aggressively and successfully marketed internationally by private Rwandese in the Diaspora including right here in Los Angeles.  I recently encountered one of these representatives at a gifts and decorative accessories trade show in Los Angeles.  Interestingly, among the "Rwandan" products displayed in her booth were baskets from ........ Uganda. 

In my opinion, someone is doing something right somewhere.  So, as Ugandans also in the Diaspora, let us learn what we can from the successes of our neighbors and apply it in our own communities.
