Israeli tanks shell UN-run school in Gaza, kills 16

Israeli tank shells has slammed into a UN-run school in the northern Gaza Strip, killing at least 16 Palestinians.

The attack took place in Beit Hanun on Thursday, with reports saying that at least 200 others were also wounded. A one-year-old child was reportedly among the fatalities.

Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said the victims were among hundreds of people seeking shelter from Israel’s offensive in the area, adding more dead bodies and wounded people are expected to arrive at nearby hospitals.

A spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) also confirmed the attack.

Ayman Hamdan, director of the Beit Hanun hospital, said that the wounded were transferred to several medical centers around Beit Hanun, adding, "Such a massacre requires more than one hospital to deal with."

It was the latest attack in a series of assaults carried out by the Tel Aviv regime on schools and hospitals in the besieged enclave. Earlier this week, Israeli tanks shelled the al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in central Gaza, killing at least five people and injuring dozens others.

Earlier in the day, seven people, including children, were killed in Israeli strikes in Khan Younis.

The Thursday deaths brought the overall Palestinian death toll to 751, al-Kidra also said.

Palestinians have said people living in two southern villages are trapped by days of shelling and medics were unable to evacuate the wounded.
