The United States has criticized the United Nations Human Rights Council over its intention to investigate Israel’s atrocities in the besieged Gaza Strip.

“We do strongly oppose today’s special session at the Human Rights Council and the resulting resolution as the latest in a series of biased, anti-Israel actions at the Human Rights Council,” US Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Wednesday.

“We strongly oppose the creation of this kind of mechanism that you spoke about because it’s one-sided,” she continued.

“No one’s looking here at Hamas rockets, no one proposed looking at anything else other than Israel in this case, and again, we oppose it as one-sided,” stressed Harf.

In its latest onslaught on Gaza, Israel’s military has killed nearly 730 Palestinians, most of them women and children. More than 4,000 people have also been injured.

In retaliation, the Palestinian group Hamas has launched hundreds of rockets on Israel killing a few Israelis. But the resistance group has killed more Israelis – 32 soldiers – in battle grounds.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird also condemned the UNHRC decision.

“Canada is frustrated and deeply disappointed that the UNHCR decided to completely ignore the abhorrent terrorist acts of Hamas,” he said in a statement.

The decision to launch an inquiry was made after UNHRC chief Navi Pillay said that there is a "strong possibility" that Israel was violating international law through Operation Protective Edge.

Although the majority of Western states have so far kept silent on Israel’s deadly attacks or support the regime’s massacre, millions of Facebook and Twitter users from across the world have written posts condemning Tel Aviv for its military action in Gaza.
