{UAH} Researcher in Radar Rainfall Sought - BIDCO & Kalangala Forest
Queen's School of Engineering
Fixed term contract staff
Full time
€63,000 (Approx.)
The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol invites applications for a full-time PhD student in the area of radar hydrology (supervisors: Dr. Rico-Ramirez and Prof. Han - http://www.bristol.ac.uk/engineering/people). You will join a friendly department with an excellent international reputation and a lively community of PhD students.
This project is part of a large EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network project 'QUICS' – Quantifying Uncertainty in Integrated Catchment Studies, in which partners from various research institutions and commercial enterprises across Europe join forces to improve water quality management by assessing the uncertainty of integrated water quality modelling (www.quics.eu).
Project Description: Precipitation is the driving force in hydrological modelling and therefore quantification of precipitation uncertainty is key in hydrological studies. Most of the existing studies on integrated water quality models do not take rainfall uncertainty into account. Weather radars can be used to estimate precipitation at high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, radar rainfall is prone to different sources of error. This project is about developing a radar rainfall error model able to capture the different sources of uncertainty in radar rainfall estimations at various spatial and temporal scales, and to study the influence of rainfall errors on integrated water quality modelling.
Candidate Requirements:
• You will have a minimum of an Upper Second class honours degree from a UK academic institution (or international equivalent), in a discipline relevant to the PhD project.
• You have not been awarded a PhD degree.
• You will have Programming skills in Matlab or C++, with interest in weather radar and precipitation measurement/forecasting.
• You will have strong communication skills with IELTS 6.5 overall for non-English students.
Special Requirements:
• You must not have worked/studied/lived in the UK for more than 12 months in the past 3 years.
• You must be in the first 4 years of your research career
• You will have the ability to travel within the project partners countries to attend training events and secondments (5 months in the Netherlands and 3 months in Switzerland).
How to apply:
Please visit our web site at www.bris.ac.uk/jobs, enter the vacancy number ACAD100958 into the job search and follow the link to the on line application process.
*Please also follow the application procedure at www.quics.eu and specify that you are applying for the project "Propagation of radar rainfall uncertainty in integrated water quality models (ESR10)"
The interviews will take place on the 23rd September 2014 in the Netherlands. The project start date is 1st November 2014 and is fixed term for 3 years.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Miguel Angel Rico-Ramirez at M.A.Rico-Ramirez@bristol.ac.uk
The successful applicant for this vacancy may be appointed either on a fixed term or an open-ended contract depending on the extent of their previous relevant research experience, in line with the University's Fixed Term Contract Agreement.
