On Wednesday, June 18th 2014, Engineer Nicholas K. Wakou, the Speaker of the UNAA Council was in the NBS Studios with Ms. Dorren Kyomuhangi talking all things UNAA

Eng. Nicholas Kissesi Wakou, P.E. Biography
Mr. Wakou is the current UNAA Council Representative for the South-West Region 1 and the Speaker of the UNAA Council. Before then, he was the President of the North America Masaba Cultural Association (NAMCA) for 3 years. During his tenure, the association registered several notable achievements, including:
  • NAMCA got registered as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Uganda and as a Non-Profit in the Province of Ontario, Canada
  • Initiated and launched NAMCA's long-term project: the Educational Resource Center (ERC) for AIDS orphans
  • Purchased prime land in the center of Mbale city for the ERC project
  • Initiated, launched and implemented 3 short-term projects
  • Donated pediatric mattresses for the children's ward of Bududa hospital. This involved organizing the local community to spend a day cleaning the ward.
  • Acquired a high capacity, high speed duplicating machine for the District Education Office of Manafwa district as a way of aiding schools process preparatory/mock examination scripts.
  • Provided tools and implements including sewing machines and hoes to the Undungu project; a grass-roots based, self-help project in Sironko district.
  • Developed financial controls and monitoring for the NAMCA treasury which enabled annual, audited financial reports every year of my administration.
  • Launched a book "An introduction to Lumasaba" authored by Ms. Catherine Bukeni Wayero, the then Chair of the Women and Youth committee.
  • The Bududa Landslide tragedy happened on my watch.  About 500 people in 3 villages lost their lives during this tragedy.
With vast experience in the corporate world, over the last 13 years, he has worked for Dell, Inc. where he currently serves as a Principal Systems Engineer as well as a Technical lead for one of the Cloud Computing projects. In Uganda, I was employed as a Computer Engineer in Uganda Commercial Bank (now Stanbic Bank) for 7 years.
  • He represents Dell at one of the technical committees of the Standard Performance Evaluation Council (www.spec.org), SPECcloud, which is defining benchmark standards for the Cloud - an emerging technology that could change the IT landscape in Uganda.
  • He represented Dell on the Board of Directors of the Transaction Processing Performance Council, TPC, (www.tpc.org) for 5 years.
  • He was the Chair of the TPC's Public Relations committee for 7 years and was a member of its powerful Technical Advisory Board (TAB) for 4 years. As the Chair of the Public Relations Committee, he organized the TPC Technology Conferences in Singapore and Seattle, WA that brought together Database professionals in Academia, Research and the IT industry.
He went to Nabumali High School in Uganda before proceeding to the Faculty of Technology in Makerere University where he majored in Electrical Engineering. While in Makerere, he was active in student politics and served at the national level.  
 
After Makerere, he attended the graduate school of Middlesex University in London, receiving a Master's in Microelectronics Technology. Later on at Oklahoma State University, he obtained his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
 
He is married to his beautiful college sweetheart, Betty. They have 3 children Dorah, Jonah and Eleanor. They live in Austin, Texas.

Founded in 1988, UNAA is the largest and oldest association of Ugandans in the diaspora; A non-profit organization for Ugandans and friends in North America, with a particular emphasis on stimulating and encouraging nationwide acquaintance and fellowship among members in North America, Europe and Uganda, its mission is to bring together members and create a platform on which they can network, share, and experience Ugandan culture and the abundant opportunities of their new homes on the continent. This mission is accomplished through, among other ways; organizing an annual convention and trade exposition in different cities in North America during the Labor Day weekend; the annual UNAA convention has been called "The premier global networking event for the Ugandan Diaspora" bringing together leading voices in academia, business, government from Uganda and the diaspora.
