{UAH} When time is ripe dictators lose

Somoza of Nicaragua who ran the country like a family business thought he was in power for life. Three developments threw him out of power and out of the country.

1.     The growing disaffection of the middle class that wanted a say in politics to create conditions to ease the poverty and overall suffering of the majority and save its skin.

2.     Emergence of a powerful grass root movement known as Liberation Theology. It motivated the poor to seek better lives through spiritual and social change. Breaking with tradition, activist priests and nuns began to emphasize the Christ of the poor, the oppressed and downtrodden. Rather than telling the poor masses to accept their suffering and the status quo, and to await their reward in heaven, the activists helped the poor masses to improve their lives on this earth. The priests and nuns organized Christian Base Communities (CEBs) to bring the impoverished and oppressed together and work for positive change. Given massive poverty in Nicaragua and the rest of Latin America the message was revolutionary.

3.      A small group of dedicated young men and women embarked on guerrilla activities.

In July 1979, Somoza was defeated and fled into exile. In Uganda conditions are similar to what obtained in Nicaragua before 1979. All we need is all those in opposition to work together for the common good. We need true coalitions to fight for change and drive NRM out power by peaceful means in the first instance.
