Zimbabwe Capable Of Hosting FIFA World Cup In 2034, Says Tourism Minister
HARARE, July 10 (BERNAMA-NNN-NEW ZIANA) -- Zimbabwe can host the 2034 FIFA World Cup if the nation rallies behind the vision, says Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Walter Mzembi.
Mzembi, who revealed earlier this week that Zimbabwe was planning to put in a bid to host the tournament, told the National Assembly on Wednesday that it was important for Zimbabweans to unite around such visions to see them become a reality.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in 2011 that it was possible for Zimbabwe to host the 2034 World Cup "as long as we keep on having such big dreams and vision", Mzembi was quoted as saying earlier.
The revelations were met with mixed feelings with some expressing reservations over Zimbabwe's capacity to hold such a huge event.
Mzembi said Zimbabwe could also put in the bid on the back of regional infrastructure when responding to a question from Makoni South's member of parliament Mandi Chimene who wanted to know the government's position on the World Cup bid.
"It is possible to host the World Cup on the back of regional infrastructure, we can mobilise South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana and Zambia with Zimbabwe providing the lead bid to host this event," he said.
