{UAH} "Commercial agriculture is key to Busoga's financial stability"
President Museveni has observed that the commercialization of
agriculture in Busoga Sub-Region will cause financial stability to the
area.
The President was addressing a delegation of NRM Women's League from
Busoga Sub-Region that called on him last evening at his country home
in Rwakitura Kiruhuura district. The delegation was led by
Parliamentary Speaker, the Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga and
included MPs from the Sub-Region, leaders and grassroots mobilizers.
"The commercialization of agriculture is what Busoga needs to attain
financial stability. However, crops such as maize and sugarcane can
yield highly only if done on large scale", he emphasized.
President Museveni advised the women to adopt the 7-acre method of
agriculture in order to ensure better and higher profits from their
varied activities even for those who have small pieces of land.
He cited projects such as piggery, poultry, dairy cows,
pasture/fodder, fruits, clonal coffee and food crops like matooke and
cassava that can be grown each on an acre and so that each homestead
can be sure of earning at least Shs.50 million annually.
The President also said that the funds that had been earmarked for the
National Agricultural and Advisory Services (NAADS) programme would
now be used to avail farmers with breeding and planting materials.
Mr. Museveni strongly cautioned the people of Busoga Sub-Region
against using the issue of expanding of families to fragment their
land holdings saying such negative practice will render their land
uneconomic thereby seriously retarding the ability of homesteads to
generate meaningful income.
