26th Annual UNAA Convention
"Unity through Cultural Awareness"
August 29th - August 31st, 2014
Hyatt Regency - La Jolla at Aventine
(Official Hotel of the UNAA Convention)
San Diego, CA
The first Ugandan immigrants to arrive in North America were mainly students with very little extra money and simple life styles.  Photographs of gatherings of Ugandans 20, 30 and even 40 years ago for the most part showed people with slender bodies and athletic builds.  However, as the socio-economic standing of our community evolved and become more affluent, so too did the overall diets and level of exercise degrade.  By some estimates, as many as 1 in every 4 Ugandans living in North America today has, or will at one time face a major health issue such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or cancer.  Indeed, this number drops to 1 in 3 Ugandans over 50 years old.

The Ugandan North American Association is pleased to present a major forum at its upcoming convention in San Diego focused on improving both the individual and general health of our members and communities.  The forum will feature presentations and discussions on the following.
  •          General life style standards for healthy living
  •          Causes and symptoms of common health issues (diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, etc.)
  •          Strategies for combatting and/or controlling common health issues
  •          How to plan for and live a healthy life
  •          Recommendations for a healthy diet
  •          Exercise as part of a healthy life style
Speakers will include the following.
  •          Dr. Susan Nyanzi (Phd in Public Health with sub-specialty in Chronic Disease Management)
  •          Mrs. Jean Kigozi Nyende (MS in Human Nutrition and Registered Dietician)
  •          Dr. Kristen K. DeStigter, M.D., FACR (Professor and Vice Chair of Radiology at the University of Vermont)
  •          Dr. Craig Sable, MD (Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine)
  •          Dr. Amy Meg Autry (Professor and Director of OB/GYN @UCSF)
  •          Mr. Jordan Darragh

Immediate following this forum, UNAA is pleased to announce that delegates can receive free basic health screenings in a separate room and also get an opportunity to talk one-on-one with a medical professional.  These screenings and consultations will be provided by the following health professionals.
  •          Dr. Mastura Zalwango, MD (President & Founder, Zalwango Health & Wellness Concierge, PC)
  •          Dr. George Otto, MD (Family Practice)
