{UAH} The Lion is an indigenous big cat called "Mpologoma" in Luganda.

The Lion (Panthera leo) is an indigenous big cat called "Mpologoma" in Luganda. The Lion is known as "Entare" in Runyoro-Rutooro and also called "Ntare" in Runyankore. In Acholi the Lion is called "Labwor" & Engatu in native Lango dialect; and in Swahili the Lion is named "Simba." The Mpologoma (Lion) is one of the clans of Ganda people upon which the Kingdom of Buganda is based. The Head of the Lion Clan in Buganda is called JJajja Omutaka Namuguzi Ssebuganda and his ancestral grounds (Obuttaka) are at Kasagga village, Bulemezi County. Nantale is a Ganda female name belonging to the clan totem of Lion. The Kabaka of Buganda is sometimes traditionally referred to as "Empologoma Ya Buganda" which means the Lion of Buganda. And Ntale is a male Ganda name for the Lion clan. Ntare is another male name from the Ankore royal clan (Abahinda). The Banyankore call the Lion's mane "omujwengye." Some hills in Kyabalogo parish located in Kyaggwe, have Lions which for decades have co-existed peacefully with the locals without harming them. Apart from seeing the footprints, it is very rare to see most village Lions. The local big cats are harmless to human beings, if not harmed, attacked or provoked.

Luo language is a bit peculiar as some letters of the Alphabet is non existent for example Luo language do not have letters;F,H,Q,S,V,X,Z hence the difficulties at times encountered by some of my luo folks in pronouncing such letters! The Central Luo came through the valley of the Nile from Sudan while Langis came via the rift valley routes from their original homeland in the present day Ethiopia actually according to anthropological studies and research Lango and Acholi do not come from a common stock Langis belonged to [Ateker group] closely related to Karamojong and Teso.

In acholi, the Labwor clan is also very predominant in the areas of agago, pader and some parts of amuru. There rich clan organisation is the origin of the notion Labwordwong

The Acholi are closely connected with the Babiitos of Tooro, Bunyoro and Buganda. Their petty names (empaako) originated from Acholi. The advent of the Luo empire [Acholi] predates the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, the connectivity of Bito dynasty to Acholi can be traced to a time in history.

Langis never had any centralized monarchy as the Ganda nation, instead they had loose egalitarian confederation of independent local chiefs; who in most cases could not unify the entire acquired geographical landmass from East Lango bordering Karamoja to West Lango in Akokoro peninsular bordering Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom and in any case these local chiefs were fiercely independent of each other. That also partly explains the current difficulties of the Paramount chief of Lango created by President Museveni yes if someone tell you that the Lango paramount chief has unified Langis that person would be telling a lie, for the Independent Republican spirit of Lango almost borders to rebelliousness to over centralized system.

2."Ntare" is Runyankore word synonymous with "ekicuncu." The plural is "ebicuncu." Runyankore and Rukiga languages are inter-related in many ways just like Runyoro-Rutooro languages, but there is no history of a hereditary Bakiga monarch or Kigezi Kingdom.

Ntare SS in Mbarara, Ankole, was named in honour of Omugabe Ntare IV Kitabanyoro, 12th King of Nkore Kingdom (1699-1727).The statue of a lion (Ntare) which welcomes you and stands in the central square of Ntare Secondary School at Mbarara was constructed in honour of previous Ankore Kings named Ntare. The early Ntares (Abagabe) established their capital in Kagarama hills. There was Omugabe Ntare I the monarch of Ankore until Omugabe Barigye Ntare VI coronated on 20th November 1993 at Nkokonjeru, Mbarara, and breathed his last in October 2011.

"ekicuncu" in Runyankore is also a name of very bitter herbal plant like ("omululuza" or "bombo" plants in Luganda).
