The Observer - Bukenya: I don't need Mao, Muntu

Feeling mighty: Gilbert Bukenya

Former Vice-President Gilbert Bukenya has said he doesn't need support from opposition party leaders to win the 2016 elections.

Addressing a press conference at Parliament Wednesday, Bukenya, who has publicly declared his 2016 presidential bid, said all he needed was the "grassroots support."

"Have I talked to FDC's [president] Mugisha Muntu? The answer is no. Have I talked to Mao [Norbert, DP] the answer is no; have I talked to Olara Otunnu [UPC]? The answer is no; but I will be there [in the race] and everything will be there; just wait, you will see," Bukenya said. "I don't need party presidents because [my] support is not in them; it's in the people at the grassroots."

"They will stay up there, but I have already grabbed the grassroots," Bukenya said.

He said his popularity was cemented largely by the upland rice scheme he promoted during his eight-year vice presidency. Bukenya, however, said he had talked to the President of the Forum for Integrity in Leadership, Emmanuel Tumusiime, and some few individuals in the opposition and NRM.

"I talked to Tumusiime, I forget his other name and the small party he is leading, and other individuals like Matia Nsubuga (DP) and FDC members, even some people within NRM, but not party presidents," he said.

He also demanded proof that government had paid any of his entitlements as a former vice president. On Tuesday, junior Public Service Minister Sezi Mbaguta told Parliament that Bukenya had been paid Shs 500m. Bukenya claims he has instructed all his three banks to "print all my bank statements for three months."

He vowed to "shame government for telling lies" that he is been paid Shs 500m, by tabling his bank statements on the floor of Parliament, soon. He urged all people planning to tarnish his name to go slow because "the world changes."

"People behind all these schemes to taint my name should go slow because this world changes. I was here and saw [Milton] Obote's government falling, I saw the falling of the mighty [Idi] Amin's government; and so, people should be aware of the fact that everything comes and goes," he said.

Asked whether he was aware that governments fall when he was still in government and pronounced Museveni as the only leader with a vision, a visibly angry Bukenya said: "People shouldn't be stuck on one's statements; tell me when I have ever sung that no change song you are talking about."

"We were all there advising the fountain of honour [President Museveni] and whenever our ideas worked, he owned them."
