{UAH} President calls on all people to embrace the National Census Exercise
President Yoweri Museveni has called on all wananchi to embrace the
National Population and Housing Census exercise that is slated to
commence on 28th August to 6th September 2014.
The President was addressing the nation this morning at State House,
Nakasero over the forthcoming Census exercise. The exercise will be
held under the theme "Counting for Planning and Improved Service
Delivery", conducted by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS). The
last National Population and Housing Census took place in September
2002.
"The National Population and Housing Census is being conducted to help
the Government to plan better for its people and it was the most
credible source of benchmark data on population size and fertility
rate in the country", he said.
President Museveni observed that the forthcoming National Census would
be the first one to take place since peace returned to Northern Uganda
especially in the Acholi and Lango Sub-Regions. He noted that both the
National Census and National Identity Card projects include capturing
the bio-data, residence, education and occupation of persons.
He further elaborated that the on-going Identity Card project is about
the individual and is designated for people aged 16 years and above.
He said that it is intended to cater the aspect of citizenship, credit
rating and crime prevention. Mr. Museveni observed that commercial
banks' lending interest rates are high in the country because
customers who borrow money from those financial institutions tend to
offload the failure loan defaulters on customers who move in to
contract loans.
Elaborating more on the forthcoming National Census exercise,
President Museveni said that it is intended to look at households and
groups of people. He revealed that the exercise will collect
information on households purposely for matters of planning.
He revealed that due to the detailed information needed, Government
has allocated 10 days to accomplish the task. He observed that the
information gathered will be important for monitoring economic changes
in the various households in the country. He strongly called on the
people in the country to give accurate information for the sake of
national development.
The President said the NRM Government's liberalization policy has made
a positive impact on the national economy and cited the transport
sector and the media industry, as some of the areas that have recorded
tremendous progress on account of liberalization.
