{UAH} President Museveni opens another university (in Ibanda)
President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned the newly established
Ibanda University and urged its proprietors and founders to emphasize
quality education for the good of that institution in particular and
also for the good image of Uganda as an educational hub in the region.
The President told the administration of the new University that the
National Resistance Movement liberalized the education sector to cater
for the large number of students that yearned for tertiary education.
He said that the policy has seen a number of private universities and
tertiary institution spring up in the country. He, however, said that
the challenge was on the courses offered in these institutions that
have lately churned out many professionals whose skills are not on
demand on the labour market.
The President who was speaking at the ceremony of launching Ibanda
University yesterday in Ibanda Town Council, challenged the founders
of the institution not only to produce quality professionals but also
offer courses whose skills are on demand on the employer market.
"Emphasize science education, technical education, nursing and
midwifery and accounting and auditing", he advised. He pledged a bus
to the institution and Shs.100 million toward the construction of a
lecture room block for the university.
The Ibanda University Vice Chancellor, Professor Samson Opollot,
commended the President for being pro-active in the promotion of the
education sector as the main pillar of the development of the country.
He singled out the Universal Primary and Secondary Education
programmes, saying the programmes opened door to children who, would
otherwise not have accessed education. He further commended the
government for emphasizing technical and vocational training as well
as the skilling Uganda programmes.
Professor Opollot further noted that the liberalization of education,
had given impetus to the establishment of many tertiary institutions
in rural areas. He said that this had played a major role in the
extension of the much needed education to the rural communities
resulting in the lowering of the cost of education.
State Minister for Works, who is also MP of Ibanda South Constituency,
Engineer John Byabagambi, among others, attended the ceremony.
