Gen David Sejusa in London

David Sejusa has termed government's plan to have him extradited and arraigned before the military General Court Martial here as "nonsense".

In an e-mail to The Observer on Monday, the former coordinator of Uganda's intelligence services said government did not have to go this far.

"Charging me is not such a big deal to me. If they want me there [in Uganda] to be charged, they don't have to bother asking the British government to hand me over because I will bring myself sooner rather than later. So, all that is nonsense," Sejusa wrote.

Sejusa, who has been in a self-imposed exile in the UK for almost one and a half years, added that he would only come by his own timetable. In a statement emailed to The Observer on Saturday, Defence and UPDF Spokesman Paddy Ankunda said the Ugandan government was in advanced stages of asking the UK government to hand over Sejusa for prosecution.

However, Sejusa believes he is safe from the long arm of Ugandan law, telling us: "Unfortunately for them though, the British don't hand over people to killer regimes."

Sejusa, formerly known as Tinyefuza, fled Uganda in April 2013, after demanding an investigation into an alleged plot to eliminate senior army and government officials opposed to the future presidency of the First Son, Brig Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Francis Matovu

In his statement, Lt Col Ankunda also warned that civilians and security personnel found to be aiding Sejusa would be tried in the court-martial. On August 22, The Observer reported about businessman Francis Matovu 'Bbuto', who had been briefly arrested over his relationship with Sejusa.

Matovu said officers of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence had asked him about his business dealings with Sejusa and other soldiers and businessmen. Matovu reportedly told his interrogators that Sejusa was his business mentor and he saw nothing wrong in dealing with him in business. However, Ankunda argues this is virtually treasonable, because Sejusa declared war on Uganda.

According to Ankunda, Matovu accepted remitting finances to Sejusa in London, an allegation the latter denies.

"Col Ankunda should not try to threaten me because I'm not that type. During detention, I never said that I send money to Sejusa. As a civilian, my interest is purely in business; that is why Brig Kyanda wanted to buy my Land Cruiser and I refused. Are they also going to charge me for that?" Matovu asked on Sunday.
