Uganda's finance minister has announced that private schools will no longer be granted tax-exempt status.

"It is the government's obligation to educate Ugandans, and private schools just come to assist it," said Bishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kasana-Luweero, as quoted by the Kampala-based New Vision.

"But if the government comes to tax them, it would incapacitate them from contributing tangibly to the education of Ugandans," he added. "If the government insists on taxing the private schools, many of them will end up closing down, because they are poor."
