Brothels come to Kampala

As prostitutes attempt to evade the law, they have connived with lodge owners to unofficially launch brothels that work at daytime and nighttime.

With the rapid modernization and subsequent urbanization taking place in Uganda, the world's oldest profession prostitution has taken a new dimension. Brothels (the dens where prostitutes reside) are mushrooming all over Kampala City. Our undercover reporter went through the five divisions of Kampala namely Makindye, Rubaga, Nakawa, Central and Kawempe and found at least 30 different brothels running at full capacity.

The brothels are disguised as lodges at both day time and night time.Sometimes their doors are closed and you need to be part of their inner circle to knock in a certain way for them to open.

They have permanent guests in women who stay there forever. They pay between 10,000 shillings and 20,000 shillings per day in lodging fees. They then wait for men who pass by to obtain sexual services.

The owners and managers of the lodges do cooperate with the prostitutes and know that they have eternal clients. Each brothel makes between 70,000 shillings to 250,000 shillings per day depending on the number of rooms available.

Aisha, one of the prostitutes our reporter found in a brothel along William Street said she was more comfortable working in the brothel. "I can never go to the street. I prefer here. No one can catch me and I can come at daytime and nighttime with no problem," she proudly admits.

Like she says, prostitutes in these facilities find it more convenient because it first of all removes the idea of rent at their own premises. They aim at making at least 30,000 shillings per day to take care of the cost of the lodging and the other basic necessities for their existence. Some do save to take care of their families wherever they are.

The brothels also help the prostitutes evade law enforcement officers who are known to raid the streets of Kampala whenever they feel like. Many have ended up in jail as a result of these frequent raids. No one can raid the brothels because the prostitutes working with the owners and personnel simply claim they are residents.

Most of the clients who visit the brothels are spill overs of the nighttime activity who make appointments with the women in these places. They also recommend their friends to test the services in the brothels. This is a cautionary measure to avoid raids from law enforcement officials who may come poised as regular clients.
