Non-violent dissent in resolving political conflicts cheaper than military force

The removal of NRM from power has given rise to two strategies. There are those led by Sejusa and Kafero who believe we must use military force to unseat the current regime. There are those to where I belong who argue that with unity of opposition, we can succeed by non-violent means in the first instance. This latter group follows in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi demonstrated that non-violent resistance "is the effective application of peaceful methods of opposition, communication and persuasion in order to bring about social or political change. It involves resisting iniquity with good, rather than further evil, and so demands patience and self-sacrifice"

Gandhi's legacy has lived on and inspired many struggling against injustice as in Uganda. Followers of Gandhi include Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu, the Velvet revolution in Czechoslovakia, Aung San Suu Kyi and by many activists and campaigners including Ugandans working on a wide range of issues. There is an increasing recognition "that addressing conflict through peaceful means is usually far cheaper and more effective than using military force"(Chris Abbot 2012). So Ugandans beware.
