Residents block Thika highway at Githurai

The busy Thika SuperHighway was blocked at Githurai 45 Tuesday morning as protesting residents lit fires threw stones at police attempting to clear the road.

Police lobbed teargas at the rowdy mobs who burnt tyres and placed stones on the multi-lane highway, including the overpass.

Motorists avoided the road, which was rendered impassable, and matatus plying the Githurai 45 route were all grounded.

HELPING FIGHT CRIME

The residents were protesting the arrest of a police officer, Titus Musila alias Katitu, who is alleged to have shot dead a crime suspect in the area.

They said the Flying Squad officer had helped improve security in the area, and therefore, he should not have been arrested for helping fight crime.

Kasarani Officer Commanding Police Division Augustine Thumbi confirmed that the officer had been arrested on suspicion of murder and had appeared and charged in court last week.
