{UAH} Att Katikiiro Mayiga: Saving Kabaka's Lake in Ndeeba

Kabaka'S Lake in Ndeeba sits on 53 acres of land –  Buganda land board would need to secure the land title.

Where Kabaka's Lake is located is both a wetland and a water body of significant importance to tourism, history and an increasingly hotter city due to gas emissions. I therefore propose that  before BLB embarks on beautification and redevelopment of this area, get the Ministry of Environment and NEMA to clearly delineate the boundaries of the Lake and its adjacent catchment areas with mark stones as per the NEMA regulations.

Eventually people have to relocate from the area.

The Lake should also be emptied of polluted water for at least two or three months since it will require further excavation to remove debris, sediments and garbage (bottle, polythene)  that has over the years been dumped and accumulated into the Lakes. This will also be an effort to restore its depth and lake shores need to be reinforced with special rounded stone aggregate, planted with specific grass type, to make it stronger and saving it from water wave erosion.

The Lake bed need some rest – to regenerate before water can be released back into it, to fill up the lake once again. The lake will have islands in it to attract bird nesting etc. It can also be planted with fish for sport fishing at a fee, BLB can determine.

Efforts could also be made to identify all sources of water that flows into the Lake originate from. These water springs will need to be secured and fenced off from public pollution. The wetland need to be expanded to more than six acres and all manmade and dug drainage systems blocked so that the water works its way out through the wetland undergrowth to clean it before it reaches the lake.

There is need to restore the wetland in front of Miracle centre normally filled with storm water from Rubaga Namirembe and Mengo and protecting the four main streams. This is in addition to blocking all sewer, drainage and latrines from adjacent homes and premises.

Then KCCA will go further to get some sort of a bylaw outlawing driving (blocking off all roads), brick making, excavation of any sort, cars, vending, motorcycles, or washing and dumping any material that could endanger the marine ecology of the Lake.

There is need to create a car park some distance away from the Lake for visitors. In fact the roads around the lake could be paved with pavers for walking activities only. Removal of motor garage is key to stopping mud from entering the lake.  To further mitigate pollution of the Lake all around it, that is the 100meter radius  – there should be an indigenous tree forest planted.

This will become the most beautiful places to be visited in and around Kampala.

The Baganda Destroys Kabaka's Lake in Ndeeba!

Once, the wetland filtering storm water from Mengo, Rubaga and the surrounding areas to Kabaka's lake in Ndeeba is gone- then the lake itself will be no more. It is already heavily sedimented with silt and urban waste and polluted with all types of affluent including faecal matter. Writing about what is happening at this treasure has not clicked to make Mengo think or Buganda Land Board to act despite singing about Buganda monumental treasures!

The wetland is now reduced almost to a mere 1/6 of its original size, after being fenced off by Kayanja's  Miracle centre church last November 2013. This come on the heels of similar huge chunk being fenced, in front of the church itself which floods whenever it rains.

Streams feed the Kabaka's lake under Kayanja's Church, the subterranean river systems have also been covered with soil.

The rest of the wetland was recently fenced off and Kayanjas' Miracle Church poured murmur into it. This soil is ending up into the lake through the water drainage channels that had been ignorantly dug into the wetland to drain it. This a futile attempt since the wetland has subterranean river systems.  St. Lawrence University too has fenced of a huge chuck that has springs under it.

Just yesterday men were busy fencing off the land adjacent to the police station – and it is this piece of land that will finally spell doom to the lake. The only solution to rescue the lake is to reclaim the entire wetland right from Rubaga Road to Rubaga church and close off the road along the lake from the palace.
