I wish to start with commending the New Vision Group Management for bringing to light the excesses of the BMU on Lake Victoria. From the outset, i wish to assert that i do not condone bad fishing practices. However the way this vice is being stopped or controlled borders on wanton Human Rights Abuse. Most of the Rights abused are Freedom from Torture and the Right to property. On Monday at 10.00 PM as i was watching a news item on Bukedde TV1 "Agataliko Nfufu",i witnesses torture, cruel and dehumanizing incidents by the BMU led by one Bernard Onyango (I hope he has no relationship to the late Makerere and Nkozi Universities Administrator).During the caption, Police chased suspects with gunshots and teargas near Entebbe. On being arrested, the suspects were flogged mercilessly with one of them stripped to the underwear!!.In another incident, suspects were found under a tree and were immediately told to lie down for flogging!!One of the men nearby was holding a child!!You can imagine the effect that action will have on the poor child. These people then proceeded to dismantle boats and burn fishing nets.I must confess that i do not know where these people derive their authority from but would want to believe such acts should be sanctioned by a competent Court of Law.I wish therefore to call upon Human Rights Lawyers like Ladsilus Rwakafuzi, Human Rights NGOs like FHRI and the Uganda Human Rights Commission to take up these cases and help these wretched of the earth.I will be disappointed if this group which even has an expatriate among them is left to continue like this unabated. The Mayor of Entebbe, the Entebbe municipality MP and Busiro south MP should also visit the areas and sensitize the people against bad fishing practices and also their Rights.
