Makerere Guild President Injured In Chaos As Police Battled Rioting Students
Two students have been injured in the chaos between Police and Makerere University rioting students this morning.
The Makerere University Students' Guild President Ivan has reportedly broken his leg as he attempted to flee from the Police who were firing teargas and live bullets to disperse rioting students.
The students started demonstrating early this morning over the increment of graduation fees which were hiked from Shs90,000 to Shs220,000.
Senate made a decision to increase graduation fees from Shs90,000 to Shs220,000 for all undergraduates starting this academic year, and Makerere University Council has approved it.
The university Vice Chancellor, Prof Ddumba Ssentamu, confirmed the increment on Wednesday last week, saying the decision was based on the ever increasing operational costs.
"I am aware that council sat and approved the increment and this is based on the increasing costs in procuring materials including printing of certificates and transcripts.
Early this morning, students stormed the administration broke protesting against the decision. Police intervened when some students started destroying property.
The University management is currently meeting with the student leaders to find a way forward.
