Police block Besigye from music launch
NTUNGAMO. Former Forum for Democratic Change party president Kizza Besigye has called for political tolerance, arguing that political differences should not disunite the populace.Speaking during a service at All Saints Church, Ntungamo on Sunday, Dr Besigye, who was accompanied by many Rukungiri District Opposition politicians, said lack of political tolerance is undermining social cohesion.
"Where is a difference between someone dressing in yellow (NRM party colour) and someone in blue (FDC colour). We are all equal before God. You cannot hate someone simply because he is thinking differently," Dr Besigye said.
Dr Besigye was in the district to preside over the launch of a gospel music album of Ms Alice Kyasimire titled "Oburyarya" (deception).
Ms Kyasimire is a granddaughter of the late Yeremiya Kampororo, who is said to have assisted President Museveni in the early stages of his education.
Prior to the launch that was scheduled to take place at Mandela Gardens, Ms Kyasimire had been denied access to four other places by police.
She was blocked from South Ankole Diocese Compassion Hall, which she had already paid for, Embassy Tours Hall, Abateganda Hall and Kyamate Secondary School Hall because she had invited Dr Besigye.
Ntungamo District police commander Baker Kawonawo commanded a team of police officers to pull down tents, cordon off the venue and block the road entering Mandela Gardens, where the launch was to take place. They blocked Dr Besigye, Ms Kyasimire and her fans from reaching the venue.
Earlier during the church service, FDC party members contributed more than Shs2 million. Dr Besigye gave the artiste Shs1 million.
Dr Besigye said blocking Ms Kyasimire from launching her album was a sign of weakness in the systems of government and fear that has gripped the system.
Mr Kawonawo, however, said they stopped the function because the police had not been made aware of the security arrangements which made them invoke provisions in the Public Order Management Act.
