{UAH} Produce few children, says Museveni PRESIDENT MAKES U-TURN ON BONNA BAZAALE PROG
(We were used to hearing him urge his boys and girls to procreate
without ceasing, ostensibly to create market for goods and services.
We squeezed him about it and now this! But Besigye has too few
children. Only two! Four is recommended)
Produce few children, says Museveni
Wakiso- President Museveni used the World Food Day yesterday to urge
Ugandans to produce few children to solve the problem of food shortage
in the country.
In his speech read by Vice President Edward Ssekandi, the President
said although poverty and hunger levels have reduced in the country,
some people in the east and northern parts of the country are still
living in poverty.
"I caution Ugandans to produce only those children you can fully take
care of and feed properly. While as government in the past
concentrated on social- economic infrastructure, we have recently
embarked on food security and I am happy with steps taken in this
regard," the President said during celebrations at the National Crop
Resources Research Institute in Wakiso District.
"We appeal to everybody to increase productivity through the use of
fertilisers. Your professionals [agriculturalists] should teach our
people improved productivity per unit area by providing them improved
seeds and extension services," he added.
The President's U-turn of few children per family is a contrast of his
past arguments that a big population is good for the country.
The President also urged small scale farmers to utilise manure and
carry out afro- forestry to reduce the effects of climate change. He
said farmers should utilise the zoning of the country and grow crops
under cooperatives.
Mr Mats Persson, who read the speech of the World Food Programme
Country Director, said 37 million people go hungry in the world and
the most hit countries are in Africa,
He said resultant effects of malnutrition are capable of reducing a
country's work force by 9.4 per cent and can take more than 15 per
cent of a national Gross Domestic product in treating the effects of
malnutrition.
Mr Persson highlighted that Uganda loses Shs1.8 trillion annually due
to effects of malnutrition, Shs500 billion in treating diarrhoea,
respiratory condition related to malnutrition.
