The Role of the media in the Amama sacking drama(By Nicholas Opio)
First the army calls media houses informing them to troop their cameras and reporters to witness a 'major' event at Amama's residence. The media obliges.
The same media calls the Amama family who also hit the airwaves and Internet to seek support, which came in droves.
Before the army could arrive for their 'major' and dare I add dramatic event, the news of their storm of Amama's residence had spread on social media platforms. This forced the army to downplay what they promised to be 'a major' event to a mere stand down of forces that had been guarding the former premier.
Their heavy deployment of about 5 cars, two trucks and nearly 60 amended army men turned out to be a PR disaster for the army.
On Saturday night the same tactic was used. First after the 'triumphant' return of President Museveni, the police called media houses announcing a secret plot to search on Saturday night all Amama residences and offices in the country simultaneously.
The same media contacts provided this info to the Amama network who also shared the same to their contacts. This time the search was halted for fear of another PR disaster.
Then the tabloids hit headlines on Sunday detailing the weapons recovered from Amama's house after the stand down. Their sources quotes in the story appears less credible than the tabloid itself on this story .
Earlier in the weeks renown media trainer Dr Peter Peter Mwesige posted on his wall why a lot of media space was being dedicated to the praise of Rugunda other than focusing of the Museveni Amama relationship.
Again the Merida took no heed and confined its lopsided and uncritical reportage of events. This begs the question whether media houses have taken sides or are simply radarless in their appreciation of the events unfolding.
I am not qualified to offer any answers to this and their questions on the role of the media in this saga. But my ordinary observation of events is that the Merida is being played like a tennis ball and have sons the public a disservice in its coverage of the unfolding events.
Prone to sensation, and the dash to break news other than understand and analyze the news, they have been tossed and provided little if not misleading information to their audience.
But again I amount an ordinary legal practitioner, what would I know about the media? Maybe I am wrong. I pray I am.
