Cape Town - A passenger on board low-cost airline Mango has been forced to clean up the mess he made after pulling down his pants and urinating in full view of other passengers in the plane's galley, the Herald Live reports.

The incident happened on Sunday at 7pm flight from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg, with flight crew members claiming the man was intoxicated and had insisted on using the bathroom during take-off.

Mango spokesperson Hein Kaiser said I the report that when the passenger was reminded to take his seat during take-off, the passenger decided to walk to the front of the plane and urinated in full view of  all on board.

Kaiser confirmed the "unfortunate incident", with the report stating the man was detained when the flight landed in Johannesburg.

"When the commander of a flight advises travellers to fasten their seatbelts, it is for good reason and is standard operating procedure on airlines the world over," said Kaiser.

He said all the man had to do, if he was desperate to pee, was ask.

"In rare instances, when a traveller's need for the lavatory is immediate and the urgency occurs during turbulent conditions, the captain may permit use of the ablution facilities."

Mango apologised to the other passengers, saying "such behaviour will not be tolerated on board any Mango flight".
