A prominent Ugandan gay rights activist has been brutally beaten by a homophobic mob.

Human rights advocate Kelly Mukwano was rushed to hospital after the attack, which left him with multiple injuries.

Mr Mukwano is a dedicated activist who heads the 'Hate No More' campaign, and recently attended the ILGA Conference in Mexico.

According to to a report by campaigner Melanie Nathan, Mr Mukwano was attacked by a "mob" of homophobes, who left him with a number of injuries, including a badly injured eye.

Another activist confirmed: "News reaching me that my friend Kelly Daniels Mukwano has been attacked and beaten seriously.

He is currently in intensive care following the attack.

Edwin Sesange of the Out & Proud Diamond Group told PinkNews: "Our hearts and prayers go out to Kelly, his family, friends and all LGBTI rights defenders in Uganda.

"This clearly shows that life threatening attacks to gay rights activists are on the increase in Uganda. We totally condemn these acts.

"We call on the Uganda government to scrap the anti gay laws, condemn mob violence towards the LGBT community, and offer protection.

Mr Mukwano has been the subject of threats before, telling theTelegraph earlier this year: "[My landlord] said people knew I was a homosexual, and he could not guarantee my safety, they could come and kill me at any time.

"When I left, people were staring, whispering. I did not realise the danger I was in.

"I cannot leave this country, it is my home and still I love it. But I worry now that I cannot be a Ugandan, and a gay man, and survive."
