Botswana minister calls for minimum marriage age and introduction of brothels
Botswana's Assistant Minister of Local Government Botlhogile Tshireletso on Friday called for the introduction of a minimum age for marriage to protect young girls from gender-based violence.Tshireletso, who is also chairperson of the Parliamentary Caucus on Women, said political leaders should take responsibility to protect children by introducing laws that would delay marriages and ensure that girls stayed longer in school.
She noted that there was also need to amend the existing Domestic Violence Act to address issues of marriage rape.
The minister recently called for the introduction of brothels and legalization of prostitution in the country as one of the interventions to curb the spread of HIV and AIDS.
