Fresh charge against Uganda assault maid
A magistrate's court in Uganda has issued a fresh charge of assault against a housemaid who appeared in a video that went viral torturing a toddler.Jolly Tumuhirwe aged 22 was on Friday paraded before Chief Magistrate Lillian Bucyana of the Buganda Road Court.
Magistrate Bucyana read to her the fresh charges of assault and occasioning bodily harm contrary to Section 236 of the Penal Code Act to which Tumuhirwe pleaded guilty.
Earlier in the trial a charge of torture was brought against her to which she also pleaded guilty.
During mitigation, the State Prosecutor Lino Angunzo asked for the maximum sentence of five years for Tumuhirwe, arguing that she had tortured a defenceless child she had been employed to look after.
Tumuhirwe's lawyer Ladislaus Rwakafuuzi said he had had a chance to speak to his client and she had expressed remorse for her actions.
Rwakafuuzi said that not only did Tumuhirwe deeply regret her conduct, she wanted an opportunity to ask for forgiveness from the child's parents Eric and Angella Kamanzi.
Rwakafuuzi said that Tumuhirwe pleaded for a light sentence because she was repentant and would never commit such an act again.
The tortured child's parents were given a chance to address the court and their major question was why the maid treated their child that way.
The Victim's father Eric Kamanzi asked the court to give the maid a maximum sentence of five years.
The magistrate has now set Monday as the date for judgment.
According to Ugandan laws assault attracts a maximum sentence of five years.
