Bloemfontein - EFF leader Julius Malema on Sunday called for the party to create policies to benefit the people.

"When we say the people, we are referring to the dejected and rejected people in society; the youth who can't find jobs; squatters who live without water and sanitation. Mineworkers who risk their lives in the belly of the earth," he told delegates at the party's elective conference at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

About 2 600 delegates were expected to elect their top six leaders at the event.

The Economic Freedom Fighters, formed more than a year ago, portrays itself as the vanguard of the poor.

Malema accused his former party, the African National Congress, of failing the majority for the sake of pleasing a selected few.

"The ruling party does not welcome radical policy shift. It instead looks at protecting the interests of minority white monopoly capital," he said.

Problems facing the country, such as poverty, unemployment and other societal ills, would continue as long as the ANC was in power, he said.

He called on South Africans and Africans to tell their own history.

"We should tell our own history. There are many Mickey Mouses out there who tell our history in a distorted manner."
