Actor and director Tyler Perry is embarking on a new role as a father.

The 45-year-old welcomed a baby boy on Sunday after his girlfriend, model and activist Gelila Bekele, gave birth to his son, Aman Tyler Perry, reports People.

'Mom and baby are happy and healthy. Tyler is so excited,' a source revealed.

Perry and Bekele have been dating on and off for the past five years.

The Diary Of A Mad Black Woman actor must have been inspired by the holidays when his first child arrived over Thanksgiving Day weekend, as the name Aman means 'peace.'

The source added that for the media mogul it reflects 'the true meaning of Thanksgiving and then, of course, the holiday season.'

Perry, who revealed in 2009 that he suffered physical and verbal abuse by his dad throughout his childhood until he was aged 19, will likely find fatherhood a cathartic experience.

'He's over the moon. He sees this as an opportunity to make things right,' the source said. 

In September, a source told the magazine that he already set up a nursery and was keen to change diapers. 

That same month the Gone Girl actor told Extra how excited he was about the arrival of his son.

'The greatest gift I'm being given right now is the opportunity to give the little boy in me everything I never had, so that's what I'm excited about,' he said. 

'This beautiful human being that God has allowed to come into my life for me to get to know, because they come with their own personalities, who they are, to shepherd and usher him'
