Nebbi. Communities of Paminya Jupukei and Nyayamo village in Paminya parish, Atego Sub-county, Nebbi District are divided over Shs32 million after land on Okongo hill was leased to a company for development.
The wrangle started three months ago when Paminya Jupukei, which claims ownership of the hill, leased it to Rock Global Oil Limited for 20 years to carry out stone quarrying.
However, Nyayamo community wants a share of the money because they claim the hill is a cultural site.
The acting chief of Paminya chiefdom, Mr Saverio Oyoma, said the land owners accepted to lease it to Mr Vincent Okaba, the proprietor of the company. "I signed the land agreement as chief of Paminya chiefdom because the land doesn't belong to the whole of Paminya community but to Jupukei," Mr Oyoma said.
The Alur Kingdom prime minister, Mr Edwin Wathum, last Friday said the lease offer should be allowed because the hill is not a cultural site.
"Never mix interest of money with politics to destroy culture because culture is so independent," Mr Wathum said.
Mr Okaba said he should be allowed to continue developing the land because he bought it from Jupukei community, adding that the deal was signed by Paminya chief.
"I have not grabbed people's land. If there was anything, the complaints must take me to court to sort out the matter rather than writing threatening letters," Mr Okaba said.
