IN SUMMARY
It is believed the 29-year-old businessman drowned after a canoe he was riding in capsized on Sunday evening.
Kampala.
Monday morning is no time for a family gathering. Just like a dusty landing site is no place to hold the same. The family huddles in small groups, looking out into the placid waters hoping for any sign.
In the distance, one can make out two boats that seem to be circling a spot. They are looking for Edmund Kamali, the absent honoree of this gathering. The landing site is the nearest place the people could converge from where their loved one was last seen alive.
It is believed the 29-year-old businessman and resident of Naalya drowned after the canoe he and a female friend were riding in capsized on Sunday evening. Kamali and his friend are said to have been taking a leisurely boat ride to cap a pleasant afternoon at the nearby Miami Beach, Port Bell.
The Port Bell Beach Management Unit chairman, Mr Steven Sunday, said loud screams were heard from the water at around 7.30pm on Sunday. "A boat launched to investigate found a man and a woman clinging onto a capsized boat. The responders also learnt that a third person was missing and was thought to have drowned," Mr Sunday said. The man who survived was the canoe operator while the missing person was Kamali.
It is thought they had procured the canoe at the Miami Sands Beach Resort. Mr Sunday confirmed that the missing man's car was found at the entertainment centre and has since been removed.
Tracing the problem
At the waterfront at Miami, groups of youth who sell and rent out swimming gear are open for business. They say they are not aware of any small canoes for hire in the area, saying lake tours are only allowed on one authorised boat which is fitted with safety gear and has life jackets. The vessel Kamali was travelling in was a small canoe.
Mr Sunday also said the landing site has one authorised boat for tours though sometimes those attached to Ggaba Landing Site also ply the area between the Miami Beach and Port Bell.
"No unauthorised boat is allowed to take passengers on tours," he added, though later admitting that regulation is an issue and small canoe operators still manage to do business. Back at the landing site, Kamali's family and friends search for shady spots as the afternoon heat moves in. Every now and then, one breaks down and others console him.
His friend Alex Mulondo, who was also his best man at his wedding last year, says they have since learnt that Kamali, after spending an afternoon of fun and drinks with his female friend, wanted to take pictures near some of the docked ships at Port Bell and got a boat to transport them there. Only they never made it as the boat capsized, throwing the three occupants in the water.
Divers were still searching the spot off Port Bell by Monday evening, hoping to retrieve Kamali's body.
