{UAH} Pope Francis appoints twenty new cardinals
Before an estimated 150,000 pilgrims assembled in St Peter's Square for the
Sunday midday Angelus prayher, the Pope seized the opportunity to read the names
of the 20 newly appointed cardinals, 15 of whom potential electors in a next conclave
and the five others, aged more than 80, non electors.
The nominations continued to mark the Pope's intention to enlarge the representation from
the Global South, with Africa, Asia, the Oceania, and Latin America dominating the list.
These new cardinals will be officially created in the consistory the Pope will hold on 14/02/2015
after which, from 16/02/2015, the pope will hold discussions with all cardinals from the world on the
necessary reforms of the Curia.
Among the new cardinals are two eminent African prelates, Archbishop Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel
of Addis Ababa Ethiopia and Archbishop Arlindo Gomes Furtado of Cape Verde.
The rest of the cardinals are from France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, New Zealand, Vietnam, Mexico, Myanmar, Thailand,
Uruguay, Tonga Islands, and Panama.
France's Mgr Dominique Mamberti is the only member of the Vatican Curia to figure on the new list.
The five non electors ( aged 80 and above) have been carefully chosen from those prelates who have once shone in their
episcopal career as Metropolitan bishops or Papal Nuncios.
The Pope's list of these new cardinals draw applauses from the vast crowd.
Before reading the names on this list the Pope had addressed the vast crowd on the role and importance of peace, true peace from God
whose roots are planted in prayer. He further went on to say that without peace there is no future. And he asked the crowd
to think of making some relevant kindly gestures towards especially those in difficulty as that would logically be the right grain
planted to groom peace.
